Worthys 11 1 M & T 5,
Report by Manager Mark Sills
A match that was perhaps a little closer than the scoreline suggests will always be remembered for Will H’s first goal in Tiger’s colours. A sweet strike across the keeper into the bottom corner from the edge of the box was celebrated as if we had just won the cup! Having been close on several occasions last season, this goal was well deserved by a player who continues to improve at a rapid rate of knots!
Tigers lined up with a slight change to formation – Orkun just behind the front two with Lewis sitting deep to protect the defence in Central midfield. The players were asked to show greater composure on the ball in the first half this week, which they duly did right from the first whistle.
A delightful passing move ended in a great chance for Sillsy which he unusually skied high and wide. Will H was finding acres of space on the right hand side and was well fed by Nick E, Lewis and Orkun. A series of positive charges down the wing led to Worthys being forced onto the back foot. Half chances for Adam and Findlay came and went. Orkun finally broke the deadlock, smashing in from close range after a low Sillsy corner caused havoc in the Worthys defence.
Tigers settled, with Orkun looking dangerous and Findlay coming more and more into the game. One of Findlay’s through balls found Adam who unselfishly squared it to Sillsy to guide past the keeper for 2-0. Worthys came back and brought a good save out of Rob at his near post. But just before half time Adam latched onto a through ball and kept his head to bury his shot into the bottom corner.
Lewis made way for Will G at half time and Tigers began where they had left off.
Hogey’s cracker made it 4-0 and Adam continued to terrorise the defence with strong runs onto through balls. One of these resulted in his second goal, showing great determination and persistence to hold off a defender and then follow up his initial shot to ram the ball home. This capped a great personal performance and earned him the ‘man of the match’ award.
James and Charlie replaced Orkun and Sillsy. Worthys to their credit never gave up and a couple of long rangers nearly caught Rob out, one of which he parried onto the bar. Despite the tide of possession turning, Worthys attackers just couldn’t shake off the rock solid Scott and Nick at the back. However, they were rewarded for their spirit with a free header from a corner. More marking up practice needed at training then!!!
But Tigers held on for their biggest win of their short history!
Worthys 11 1 M & T 1
Hogey capped a great day with a superb save early on. Nick C put the disappointment of missing the league game with a barnstorming performance, firing two superb long rangers at the keeper, then smashing one against the bar. Charlie showed his growing confidence with a couple of lovely turns and runs. Will G impressed with his headers and throw ins. James battled back superbly to help his defence and had a powerful shot brilliantly saved. Nick E provided a perfect through ball for Sillsy to chip over the keeper for 1-0. Rob C and Lewis were often outnumbered at the back as the others looked for the glory and made some great interceptions. This led to Worthys’ equaliser in the dying seconds despite Jacob’s brave attempt to run the length of the pitch to recover.
